In the summer we keep a stick of butter in the fridge that's JUST for rolling corn over. We use another butter for toast, etc.

I think it depends on your house and hosts. The most "decorous" way to spread butter is to get one of those butter holders that you put the stick of butter in and close it and then the butter comes out one end and you hold the plastic holder in your hand. This is like using a knife, but neater.
When it is just friends or family, we ALWAYS roll the butter! It is easier, neater, and quicker! But it is a separate "corn only" stick of butter, no one wants to dip into the corn laden, unruly butter!
As for the animal feed thing, those people are crazy! Nothing better than corn on the cob loaded with butter and salt!

many many people believe that corn on the cob should not be eaten as such, but cut off the cob prior to serving. unless one is alone or among VERY close friends, one should not eat the corn on the cob.
as for rolling it on the butter? well, if the butter is served to you and you alone, then though it is incredibly messy and tacky, you may do so. rolling it onto butter that is to be enjoyed by others is a definite no-no!

If you're talking about the dish of butter sitting in the middle of the table for all diners to share, then neither food nor anyone's personal utinsils ever touch it. A butter knife is placed in or next to the dish, and shared by all diners; it is used to convey a portion of butter from the shared butter dish to your own plate, and then returned to its original location for the next person to use.
After the butter is conveyed to a diner's plate, the diner is free to apply it to his or her food in any manner that does earn the disapproval of fellow diners.
PS In some Asian nations frozen whole kernal corn is considered and excellent ice cream topping.

Broccoli reminds me of the Bush kin, so definately not. Corn on the Cob with Butter and Tajin, that would desire to be good. Baked Potato with Butter and Baron Verulam, might desire to be good additionally.

I, myself, use a "spoon". I know that you are supposed to use a knife but the butter is hard to control. After a couple of passes and it falls off. But the butter stays in the spoon so you can get the most where you want it.

I think if you are dining out or dining with friends you should spread the butter with a knife. However, if you are with your family or alone using the cube of butter is fine too.
