Are they strictly freelance? Do you just send them photos and see if they accept them?

I once asked this same question to a freelance photographer. He said just to send them one of your photographs along with an article about the photo.
Ex: You take a photo of a particular scenery, and then write an article about the geographical location and so on.

However, they receive so many that it could take a very long time before they get you published. It's still worth a shot, and make sure you send often.

Edit: Also make sure that your article is well written and error proof!

Nation Geographic accepts very little work from freelance photographers and no work unsolicited. When you approach the top of your field try to get into Magnum Agency as a photographer and at that point National Geographic may seem a small hurdle.

If, however you happen to be the only photographer at some catastrophic or unrepeatable event, take as many iconic images as you can and your chances rise accordingly.

I used to date the daughter of a well known National Geographic photographer. His work was noticed over years of independent work. It's more of perfecting your craft and getting it shown. When you are as good as he is, people come to you.

It's not as easy as it looks. Get a few copies of the magazine and check out the details of the shoot. Where do you live ? If you live in Pigsnot Mississippi , you may have a problem. Not many of the photos are taken in the US. And you need to pay for everything yourself, travel, ect...

If you are any good, then they will find you.

Every so often, reputable mags have photo contests. If you are serious, then perhaps you should enter a few.
