I'm 23 and I just found a gray hair a couple weeks ago. I never had it before. After all my life what causes this? And by the way it was one HAIR.

I found my first gray hair at the exact same age. I'm now 53, and I'm only 10% gray. (The rest of my family was 100% gray by age 40.) It has been said that the time between finding ones first gray hair and being completely gray averaged 15 years. And yet that did not hold true for me.

I'm guessing that such things are pretty-much unpredictable. You can look to your family for clues as to your own aging process, but what happens to them won't necessarily happen to you.

Why does hair go gray in the first place? The melanin cells at the hair's root conk out over time. As time goes on, more and more of the melanin cells conk out. The result is white hair when the melanin completely gives out, or gray hair when it's starting to give out.

Stress. Sometimes it can be genetics. Ever watch American Idol? Well in Season 5 the winner was Taylor Hicks and his hair is almost totally gray and he is 29. Not to be mean to him though. My friends say he started going gray at like 16! Look at him on americanidol.com and you'll see what I mean.

Stess, time, and genetics. Hate to burst ur bubble but we're getting older every damn day. I'll be 25 in a week and I pulled out two white hairs last week. Gotta love time.

Could be a fluke. Or you could be pre maturely graying. If you start getting a lot, you can always dye your hair if it bothers you.

I have a grey patch too. Most of my hairs in that patch are all grey. I dont know why. I sometimes dye that patch or just leave it alone. Its not that bad. Its a small enough patch to not look bad.

it could just be stress or exhaustion, but if more grays appear it could be premature gray hair, which is hereditary.
