Let's just stick with side effects for now, okay?

"Anabolic steroids are powerful hormones. They affect the entire body. Some of the side effects are common to all users. Other side effects are specifically related to your sex and age.

Men who take anabolic steroids may:

-Develop breasts
-Get painful erections
-Have their testicles shrink
-Have decreased sperm count
-Become infertile
-Become impotent

Women who take anabolic steroids may:

-Grow excessive face and body hair
-Have their voices deepen
-Experience menstrual irregularities
-Have an enlarged clitoris
-Have reduced breast size
-Have a masculinized female fetus

Both men and women who take anabolic steroids may:

-Get acne
-Have an oily scalp and skin
-Get yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
-Become bald
-Have tendon rupture
-Have heart attacks
-Have an enlarged heart
-Develop significant risk of liver disease and liver cancer
-Have high levels of "bad" cholesterol
-Have mood swings
-Fly into rages
-Suffer delusions

Teens who take anabolic steroids may:

-Have short height due to arrested bone growth
-Girls may suffer long-term masculinization

Since steroids are often taken by injections, there is also the risk of getting HIV or hepatitis infection from an unsterile needle or syringe.

'There are a lot of side effects of steroids,' Mautner tells WebMD. 'They are not good for you. It is like Russian roulette. Five people may take them and have no long-term problem. The sixth may end up dead.'"

Doesn't sound like the muscles are worth the risk, hey?

Steroids are a type of alcohol, also known as Sterols. I havent checked, but from recollection I believe they bind to certain cites in the body which release hormones that promote muscle formation. There are many side effects. Some observed side effects are higher temperaments in users, which is also known as roid rage. The penis also shrinks and may become impotent, masses of muscle form out of proportion and unexpected places. Athletes such as Barry Bonds use steroids because they have inferiority complexes. They believe that there is no way to get better, so they 'cheat'.

Some athletes take a form of steroids — known as anabolic steroids — to increase their muscle mass and strength. The main anabolic steroid hormone produced by your body is testosterone.

Testosterone has two main effects on your body:

* Anabolic effects promote muscle building.
* Androgenic effects are responsible for male traits, such as facial hair and a deeper voice.

The anabolic steroids that athletes use are synthetic modifications of testosterone. These drugs were developed in an attempt to maximize the anabolic effects and minimize the androgenic effects of testosterone. As it turns out, these two actions of testosterone can't be separated.

Anabolic steroids come with serious side effects.

Men may develop:

* Prominent breasts
* Baldness
* Shrunken testicles
* A higher voice
* Infertility

Women may develop:

* A deeper voice
* An enlarged clitoris
* Increased body hair
* Baldness
* Increased appetite

Both men and women might experience:

* Severe acne
* Liver abnormalities and tumors
* Increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol)
* Decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol)
* Aggressive behaviors, rage or violence
* Psychiatric disorders, such as depression
* Drug dependence

If an injected form is used, you'll face a higher risk of infections and diseases that are transmitted in blood, such as HIV and hepatitis. And in teens, steroids can halt their normal pattern of growth and development and put them at risk of future health problems.

athletes use them due to the desire to do better and win
they are bought online or pescribed by a doctor
side affects are headaches, increase facial hair, abnormal muscles, addiction due to results of performances

they are not good for you so i suggest to stay away

Steroids are drugs used by athletes to enhance performance. They can cause heart attack, muscle breakdown, sterility (no babies for you), mood swings, and more. Stay away from them if you have a brain.

enhancing steroids and their effects, please see Anabolic steroid.
A steroid is a lipid characterized by a carbon skeleton with four fused rings. All steroids are derived from the acetyl CoA biosynthetic pathway. Different steroids vary in the functional groups attached to these rings. Hundreds of distinct steroids have been identified in plants, animals, and fungi. Their most important role in most living systems is as hormones. Steroid hormones produce their physiological effects by binding to steroid hormone receptor proteins. The binding of steroid hormones to their receptors causes changes in gene transcription and cell function.

Steroid skeleton. Carbons 18 and above can be absent.In human physiology and medicine, the most important steroids are cholesterol, the steroid hormones, and their precursors and metabolites. In the bloodstream steroids are bound to carrier proteins.

Cholesterol is an important steroid alcohol, being a common component of animal cell membranes. However, a high level of it can cause various conditions and diseases, such as atherosclerosis. Most other steroids are synthesized from cholesterol. Also, various hormones, including vertebrate sex hormones, are steroids created from cholesterol.

Some of the common categories of steroids include:

Anabolic steroids are a class of steroids that interact with androgen receptors to increase muscle and bone synthesis. There are natural and synthetic anabolic steroids. These are the "steroids" used by athletes to increase performance.
Corticosteroids include glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoids:
Glucocorticoids regulate many aspects of metabolism and immune function, and often prescribed by doctors to reduce inflammatory conditions like asthma and arthritis.
Mineralocorticoids are corticosteroids that help maintain blood volume and control renal excretion of electrolytes.
Sex steroids are a subset of sex hormones that produce sex differences or support reproduction. They include androgens, estrogens, and progestagens.
Phytosterols - steroids naturally occurring in plants.
The term steroid is often used more restrictively in specific contexts. For instance, steroid in common medical usage by non-endocrinologists usually refers to corticosteroids, nearly always glucocorticoids. In an athletic or body-building context, steroid commonly refers to anabolic steroids.

Sex steroids include estrogen (U.S spelling) or oestrogen (UK spelling), progesterone and androgen. Oestrogen and progesterone are made primarily in the ovary and in the placenta during pregnancy and testosterone in the testis.
