Ever? Linux is already the main OS for Web servers in the world today. The rest of the servers are next. 5 years ago a job posting for a Windoze admin had no mention of Linux. Today you almost don't see a windoze admin posting that doesn't include Linux. Remember NT snuck up on Novell in the same way.

In the server world Linux has caught up to windows already.

On the desktop last I saw between %5-7 of desktops were runnign Linux. That is hard to evaluate since it's based on sales rather than what you actually run. A number of the machines I've purchased I had to purchase with windoze on them before I could put Linux on.

As for desktop abilities Linux clearly out performs windoze. The only areas it's really lagging is in games and in shared documents. Open office and Abiword blow Microsoft Word away. Open office is as good as Excel, better in some aspects. The Gimp is harder to learn than Photoshop but equivalent. Audacity is the best free sound editor out there. I had the opportunity on a dual boot machine a couple years ago to play the exact same mp3s on the same exact sound card, machine, speakers using WinAmp, Xmms and Microsoft media player. I expected Winamp and XMMS to be about the same. XMMS was surprisingly better.

The fact is Linux will overtake windows in the very near future. Europe and Asia are both moving heavily towards Linux. City Govs in the US are already moving desktops as well as major corps like Oracle. Some shops like Ernie Ball strings have been all Linux for years.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about just download Knoppix. You can try out Linux without touching the hard drive. It all fits and runs off a CD. Of course it's missing some stuff and to get on the net you'll possibly have to configure some things. Easier done in Linux than in windoze though.

Download the ISO. Burn it as a bootable CD. You might have to change your bios settings to allow a boot from CD. Then play around with it. You'll see imediately that you have FAR more control over your system enen using a CD distro than you do with windoze. You'll have tens of thousands of dollars of software already built right in. Actually it's all free but to buy the same things for windoze you'd spend tens of thousands.

Anything. Linux has been getting some awesome reviews among users and it is becoming more common in computers. Now linux is talking about releasing complete operating systems (Right now, all we're getting is the core of the OS) but they're working with backward compatibility issues. All they need to do is to allow Microsoft games to run on their OS and Microsoft will have a fight on their hands.

oh i want Linux to kill Microsoft, Ive had it with they're OS, and at the time Linux is unavailable, who can not like an OS so versatile, that it can be installed on almost anything with memory, like tivo. I'm all for Linux taking down Microsoft, but sad to say, i don't think that will ever happen.

no.. Microsoft has been around for so long that people wouldnt get used to it.. Mac can be better if they put the computers in schools, so that the next generation would be used to them but since now, i have used 1ce a Mac and it was so hard to use it(the didnt have a start Menu), i doubt it would ever overtake Pc

On the desktop, that remains to be seen. On the webserver market? They've already been whooped by Linux and Sun.
