16 months is not early, my daughter was trained and accident free by 18 months.
NO PULL-UPS!!
the first few days will be hell, but the nasty, wet, disgusting feeling will quickly help them develop a cause and effect relationship.
In other words....My body feels this way and then I feel all nasty...Next time that my body feels this way, I will try to sit on the potty and mommy will be SO proud of me.
What ever you do..don't punish accidents and make up a pee pee in the potty dance and song!!

that depends on how much time you can commit to the potty training. training pants or pullups are great for going out so your child can get in the habit of pulling them up and down without having to worry about accidents in the middle of the grocery store. underwear can be a bit of a challenge early in the process because you have to be on constant guard. if you are at home and are able to ask your child every few minutes if they need to go potty, then underwear are ok, but if you need to go out and you aren't going to have immediate access to a bathroom, I'd recommend the training pants. hope this helps and good luck!

on a side note... my daughter was potty trained by 18 months, so 16 months may be a little young, but it is possible. if your daughter doesn't take to it right away, don't get discouraged, just put it aside and try again in a few months.

Well with pull ups you'll have a lot less mess, but if you're not lazy than underwear are best. The reason? Well most kids feel like they can still go in their pants because it's the same material as diapers, where as undies are not and they can tell if they wet them or not. My daughter was two when we potty trained her, we tried a few pull ups and that didn't work so i put her in undies with the plastic cover ups over them...like the ones u would use with cloth diapers..they don't help much with the mess, but a little. Anyway, it worked in no time. Good luck!!!!!

I agree. 16 months is a little young. Might want to start out with Potty books-such as Everyone Poops. Get the child a comfortable potty chair. Let them pick it out at the store and just let them explore it. Taking the chair apart...ect. Later use the heavy cotton training pants...never use pull ups. Use the rubber pants to cover them and when you get to this point...take them to the bathroom every 20 minutes. Set a timer so you don't forget. It's time consuming. If you can...plastic cover an entire room. Bring the potty chair in the room(place it in a hidden corner--no one wants to use the bathroom in the center of the room with everyone looking) and let them roam naked. Naked training takes about 3-7 days. But can be messy if they don't make it to the chair. If you live in a rural area--even better take them outside and let them roam naked.

neither! get those thick cotton underwear and put rubber pants over them. they feel wet and nothing gets wet. then she will know why she has to use the potty, she dosent want to be wet. if u use training pants they absorb everything like diapers, so they dont feel anything. and regular underpants dont absorb ANYTHING! so they get everthing else wet too. but sixteen months is a lil small, so nothing may work at all. GOOD LUCK!

Do yourself a favor and use Pull Ups. There will be a lot of accidents at first and you will be doing laundry ALL the time!16 months seems a little early so don't be discouraged if it doesn't seem to be going well, your child will get the hang of it!

16 month's is old enough. Coming from a parent you may want to start you child in pull ups. They will still continue to have accident's.
