Well, they may not have had super-absorbent polymers and dry weave, but we've had linens for at least 6000 years that I know of, so I'm sure they just used linen pads. Maybe cotton?

I don't know what people did only 1000 years ago, but I remember in the story of Rachel and Leah, they weren't allow to touch women who were in that time of the month. Probably a courtesy to allow them to deal with the bleeding in private.

As for the pain and discomfort, I don't know what they took. For me, I know that on the months that I work out more, the pain is much easier. So, since those women worked to hard maybe they didn't have as much month to month pain.

They used linen and cotton rags or pads. There is an excellent book that deals with what women did do, and how this was all handled. You should read it, it's a great story called "The Red Tent", very much just a womens book and read....don't expect your boyfriend or husband to be interested in it. Hope that helps.

I think they just dealt with it and just washed the blood away or ethier because people back then were very supersticous they might have thought it was a mark by the devil for bad child birth but then again the people back in biblical days knew it was normal because the bible talks a bout it they probably knew it was normal and used cloth or maybe thats when the pad or tampon was invented .

Haha, I wondered the same thing. They use to use rags. They would just line themselves with rags, and whenever it got nasty they would wash it out and use another one.
