With all the workbooks, educational websites, etc. out there, do you really take advantage of some of it....especially in the summer? Do you (or parents you know) actually take the time to help explore topics kids are into? I ask this because 95% of the parents I meet seem to think I'm nuts when I mention the stuff I have my kids doing. I mean, aren't we all supposed to be doing this? Fun learning games? Projects? Getting them to write a poem or story?I try so hard on significant time restraints, then start wondering if I'm stressing myself out over nothing? The kids have fun with it, and I feel like I'm doing a good job as a parent in that department. So, I'll keep doing it....but I can't help but wonder, how much of a minority am I?

Yes. We actually homeschool, so we do work every day. We take field trips every where you can imagine just to learn and see new things. My children read a lot and do work sheets. If there is something my oldest is interested in (he's in 3rd grade) we just run with it. We get books from the library, we go to any exhibit I can find.

Right now he is into Geography and sports. So to combine the two, I have given him the task of mapping all of his favorite teams.

We are in the minority, however, and that is what's wrong with the education in this country. Parents just don't take an interest.

I give you props for being one of the few! :)

I do work with both of my children and stay on top of what they are working on at school.
My son (5yrs) completed pre k this year and in working with him my daughter (3 1/2) learned how to spell words, learned colors and other things he was working on in school.
I also have workbooks at home and it is really a treat to them to get to work on them. They ask if they can do the "work book" yet.
I encourage it and I will not stop. The number of parents that are uninvolved is just crazy. I won't have it any other way. The kids seeing that I am aware of what they are doing and helping them helps them to want to learn.

Our children, ages 11 and 10, have grade appropriate workbooks. They have to do 3 pages from each book per day. We're also reading the Harry Potter books this summer and when we finish a book, then we watch the movie!

My parents did this with me when I was a kid. We had to do book reports and go through workbooks. I didn't find it fun, but now I'm a much better writer and I feel that I learned more because of it.

I worked with my daughter for 3 or 4 hours a day when she was younger. now that she is 12 I give her a break during her summer vacation. She works very hard in school and has always manintained an A average. During the summer she mostly keeps up with her reading.
And no, you are not nuts. My daughter tells me often thet if it were not for those times that we worked together during the summer and on her intecession breaks, she would not be doing as well in school as she is now. Keep it up, but don't push it.
