That's a good question. It depends on which religion. Well, there is the crusades and even the bombings that are happening today. The answers you get for this question are gonna be different cause of the different beliefs people have. Some are very strong into 'god' while others like my self think strongly against it. Every religion has a time period where what they were doing wasn't good. The inquisitions with the catholic religion is another big one. If you look at history, religion was all corruption and a way to get money after a while. The church used to have the most power at one point! I'm pretty sure that wasn't 'god's' way's but alot of people would beg to differ.

How about the Dark Ages? Christianity, in its ascendancy, suppressed everything that did not conform to scripture and dogma. Continent-wide book burnings were a common feature of the first several centuries of Christianity. Mathematics, medicine, engineering, philosophy, literature... all of it went up in flames. After the Moors (Moslems) conquered Spain, the writings from the Greek classical age (which the Moslems had preserved) were translated into Latin and began to become known throughout the rest of Europe over the next few hundred years. Eventually, this resurgence of Classical knowledge triggered the Renaissance, which led to the rise of secular scholarship, and the decline of religion-based ignorance.
If it hadn't have been for Christianity, Christopher Columbus would probably have been embarking on a mission to establish mining colonies in the Asteroid Belt, instead of trying to find a shortcut to the Far East.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the librarian of Alexandria was pulled off her carriage and skinned alive. Literacy dropped. Even the Pope had to have the Bible read to him. In the first crusade, Christians killed tens of thousands of people they called "infidels". The Children's Crusade (1212) caused the deaths of nearly 50,000 children. Preachers sentenced to death and executed thousands during the Inquisition (1233-1834) for heresy and witchcraft. There were the the Salem witch trials (1692) in America. The 17th Century Thirty Years War (Catholics v. protestants) wiped out tens of millions in Europe. In the Taiping Rebellion in China in the 1850's a Christian cult started a war that resulted in the slaughter of twenty million people. In the Holocaust six million Jews were murdered. Muslims and Christians in Bosnia reached a death toll of over 250,000.

I believe organized religion can be blamed for almost everything if you needed to find a scapegoat. The truth lies with the individual person. Bad people in religious positions, politics, schools and so forth. The thing is when a teacher rapes a student it doesn't mar the entire staff. When a preacher does it, watch out. It gives all religion a bad name. Religion itself is a wonderful way to express your joy and love of life and to thank the One who created you.

The vast majority of wars have been caused directly or indirectly by religion therefore - millions and probably bullions of deaths.
Nearly all religions and particularly the Christian and Muslim religions seek to dictate to non believers on how to lead thier lives.

People have done a lot of harm in the name of their religions, no doubt. But people have also done a lot of GOOD in the name of their religions as well. There is nothing wrong with religion itself, I have never hurt anyone because of my faith and I doubt I ever will. PEOPLE will do what their hearts want them to do, if they have wicked hearts they will do wicked things, if they have good hearts, they will do good things.

How much damage has the attempt to destroy religion done? Look at Hitler, Russia, and China. You're just a bigot.
