Keep in mind im talking about not a total disbandment but just 95% of the military. Keeping mabey our aircraft carriers and some subs for the navy, some simple air def for the Air force, and Special forces for the military.

Unless you believe Mexico or Canada would wage a ground war who would be a threat to us? China has a huge ground army but how would they get it here without the UN stoping there illegal war. Russia has Nukes they could use on us but they can now too with about the same effect for them. And the middle east is a world away from us.

At the start of WWII we didnt have that much of a military. After pearl harbor we went into overdrive to build one. That system worked fine. To wait for danger befor shooting at it.

IN SHORT WHY HAVE A MILLITARY TODAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO ATTACK OTHERS FOR AGRESSIVE PURPOSES?

If an army is required for life as you all seem to think then how come MOST NATIONS ARE NEUTRAL? To be a neutral nation you CANNOT have a large army or nukes. Also yes the UN doesnt do much. But they have never been put to the test have they. If Hitler started today there resolutions might have bite.

Ok all you Neutural contry bashers and UN bashers listen up. Austria, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkmenistan are all Neutural and recognized by the internation comunity. The Second Hague Convention covers their existance and their protections.

There are several reasons why we keep a Military. In case you are interested our current peace time military forces are actually rather close to what we kept before WWII. We have quite a few Natual Guardsmen and reservists in uniform right now. We also did a small ramp up for the war in Iraq. However we do not keep a relitively large standing army.

Now as to consequences.

First consequence, like in WWI and WWII our troops would be ill trained an our army under equipted. We lost tens of thousands of uncessary deaths to just plain stupidity. Soldiers who did not have functional equiptment, who'd never seen this or that deadly object suddenly asked to operate it in combat. We had obsolete weapons, much of what we had at the start of both wars was not even in working order. A standing army is in part to keep a trained army. A core group that can keep everything functioning while the new troops come on board for a major war or one that can handle small wars like Iraq or interventions like Somolia.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick". Can you think of a better way to live life peacefully? I cannot. If you are polite AND more importantly people know your going to whack them with that big stick you are not politie back, you'll find people tend to be rather nice to you. The ability not the size of our armed forces prevents wars every day. China would invade Taiwan, India, Korea and Japan if not for the US. Greece and Turkey would likely be at constant war. Europe would be invaded by Russia as a means to solving economic and political issues. Isreal however does not need our help fending off Arab aggressions. Though Kuwait and other smaller Arab nations would be absorbed quickly by Arab nations like Iran. Assuming China didn't unite North and South Korea by invasion North Korea would certainly strike South Korea and they would not hesitate to use chemical and biological weapons. Pakistan and India would be in a full blown war. There would be a war of agression by the Cuba,Venuzuala pack against probably smaller nations like El Salidore if they did not align. Once the small nations were gone then big ones like Brazil would be targeted. The only reason Cuba has not invaded any South American or Carbean nation is they would face the US. Mexico would certainly invade the US. Russia might invade Canada as well as Europe. The US has long served as a buffer and protector of both Canada and Mexico. Canada would repel anything but an all out attack by Russia. Though they would pay heavily as they are not prepared to fight anybody right now. There would be hundreds of other conflicts. Who knows, some European powers might again grow agressive if the US were not the stabilizing influence it is.

A fact of life is that a power vacume will produce villians. They are drawn to it, they crave such a situation. The US disbanding our military would be a planetary sized power vacume. We also have many enemies. Some of whom we've never done anything wrong too. Some who have legit or semi-legit but way overblown gripes with us.

As for the UN ROFL, then pounding my fists on the floor in another uncontrolable ROFL. Dude. When the UN gets anything done militarily it is done with US, UK or Australian troops Period. No other nation sends either enough or soldiers equipted/trained or able to do much more than be a token force. In Africa UN troops are often robbed at gunpoint, thier weapons and supplies stolen from them. UN troops when they do see combat are often routed easily by rag tag militia groups.

UN troops rarely have the ability to do anything but absorb bullets as the UN has yet to actually carry out a military threat. It has always been up to the initiive of units in the UN command. US, UK and Australian to be specific. When under UN command nothing happens but UN troops getting senselessly slaughtered.

The UN hates America. They make resolutions condemming America. The top UN officials publicly attack America. So why would the UN if it had any power actually attempt to aid the US? If we needed help the UN would not lift a finger. What nation would actually send troops against China? All China would have to say is you send troops we shut down all trade to you. So even if they did only a few nations could even possibly send troops. Except for the US and UK no other nation in the world could go toe to toe with China right now. If the US were out of the picture Australia would be left hanging. They do not have the population or the industry to fight China. They have the courage, just not the resources. They would just be overwhelmed. The UK would be really hard put to fight China. They lack the money and military resources. The British army is a well trained and excellent fighting force. It is a small force however. The UK lacks the industry to ramp up for a major war like what a war with China would entail. Most of the critical chips that go into aircraft, tanks and ships today are made in or near China. Even the US would have to pull off a miracle to be able to keep our advanced weapons working if war came to us with China. The UK could not wage such a war for long. So there is literally nobody who could stop China from invading us but us. Though China would find local militias and other impromtu armies very difficult to deal with. The minute men armies we'd form though would suffer heavily from lack of supplies, training and communication. Nor would we be able to cooirdinate attacks. The end result would be a blood bath which would turn the Pacific red.

As for what purpose the Military serves in peace time.

First and foremost is of course assuring there will be peace. By keeping a strong trained and well equipted military we ensure the need to not fight many battles that would otherwise be thrust upon us. In our history we have had the English, Barbery coast pirates and Spanish all try to bully us when we were a small nation. We fought a war with Mexico where both sides were hoping to extend thier territory and block the other. In WWII Japan thought they could intimidate us by trashing our standing navy. We have just in the last 200 years lots of examples of what happens when you are weak militarily. Do you think the Kurds would see thier children sent into machine guns by Iraqi and Iranian non-Kurds. That Kurds would have been gassed, dragged off to prisons and executed? That no Kurd lives in a land called Kurdistan. Do think that would happen if they had a strong military?

Second the US military is a place where people go to get a start on life and where those people who crave order can find such. It is also a place where aggressive men can vent those aggressions in a postive outcome. Instead of fighting at home they train to fight enemies of thier country. Some people don't like to choose what shoes to where today. Some people need the structure a place like the military provides. Some people start careers from what they learned how to do in the military. It's an escape of sorts from a dead end youth to a life with a real future. A skill, confidence, ability and money in thier pocket. That makes a huge positive improvement over many people's outlook which would not happen if the military did not exist.

The Military is one of the biggest drivers in technological research. Many inventions spurred by the Military or developed during wars make our life what it is today.

So the US Military serves three vital roles in the peace time. It's existance is not a threat against others unless they pose a threat to us.

Hey brilliant I can tell you are not in the military nor do you know anyone in the military now do you? There is a really good reason that all of these countries leave us alone and it is not because they can't get over here grow up. You have no idea where in the WORLD all of our troops are at any given time now do you and just because Iraq and Afghanistan are the only two places in the world that are getting talked about right now does not mean those are the only two places that our troops are located or being deployed to. See there is allot going on, there are strategies happening that you civilians know nothing about and hey if you want to implement your bright idea of disbanding the military hey I say let you, but first please let all of us military, families of military and vets all move to an island then see how long it takes for you to call us back. Otherwise you might want to just trust what is going on behind the scenes and let the military do the defending even if it is your right to run your mouth.

We have a military today not only to save our own asses, but the collective asses of the world, without our military, it is VERY plausible that Mexico would launch a military invasion of the U.S.,
North Korea would invade South Korea, Iran would have nuked Israel ages ago AND probably invade Iraq, milllions more would starve in Africa, someone would bomb our nukes, and an invasion of Japan seems likely. There's more to it than that, but our military is mainly a peacekeeping force
And Besides the U.N. Can't do **** without China, as they have permanent Veto Power in the UN, as do we. And Middle Easterners have attacked us before, what's to stop an entire middle eastern nation from attacking us.

How fast would you like to die. Do you really believe if the US did not keep a large active military machine it would survive for long?

9/11 was caused by a handful of men and a few aircraft. Just think what people with real weapons could achive.

America has made far to many enemies to reduce their forces.

Are you serious? Thank your teachers you can speak English. Then thank a soldier you don't speak German, Japanese or Arabic.

But we are not a neutral country. Never have been. The UN is also not neutral. Honestly I don't think most countries are neutral. I can think of 1, maybe 2. Do you have a source for that? But you seem to agree with Don Rumsfeld. He also favors a smaller leaner force. Light on people, heavy on technology.

OMG. If we disbanded now, every country that we ever had a little squabble with, would *** rape us brutally. Especially Iraq. They would invade, mame, murder, and bomb us. That would be a huge huge huge mistake..but it wont happen. Air Craft carriers are nothing with out Frigates and Cruisers...and subs aren't equipped to handle such a huge job without back. Each ship in the Navy relies on another. That is why its called a Fleet.

This isn't even worth the time to answer really... you are obviously fishing for someone to stroke your idea a bit. You know absolutely no facts on the military and what it does for you. You have no clue as to what military statagy is and how it works. The country the lays on it's back and waits for intruders is the country that falls.
Do some homework... and I don't mean read your friggin liberal news lines. Check out military websites and read your history.

My husband is in the military, so I back him and his brothers-in-arms 110%. Understand that these military personnel have families to support and cutting them off would obviously cut off their families. Granted, civilians make more than military personnel so why stay in, but these are brave men and women who are ready to answer the call to duty. Besides, as soon as we disband our military we, as a country, are left open and vulnerable to any number of attacks.

If all nations disbanded their armies then this would be feasible.

Until then the only defense is a strong offense

Hello where have you been? We would be completely squashed without military. Get over yourself, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
