15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.

Refers to eating meat...I am also aware of the scripture in D&C 49:18 And whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God;

So does that mean ---that Yes it is OK to eat meat ---IF it is in time of famine...(and otherwise not at all----notice the word ONLY in v. 15)?

Section 89 was originally given as a word of wisdom, advice and counsel. The Church has since strictly enforced part of it, but has not said much at all about the use of meat, besides that it is okay. So I would say that eating meat sparingly is probably a higher law and if you are capable of living it, good for you, but you won't be condemned if you don't.

Doctrine And Covenants 89

That's Doctrine & Covenants from the Church of Latter Day Saints - it's not from the Bible, who are the Shakers?

Sorry, I don't know your faith and can't comment on it, but the next line states otherwise:

18 And whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God;

19 For, behold, the abeasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which cometh of the earth, is ordained for the use of man for food and for raiment, and that he might have in abundance.

Seems like it's contradictory to me... I think I'll stick to the bible, but it's interesting to learn something new about other faiths.

Thank you for the opportunity!

God Bless!!

If I'm not mistaken, before the flood, humans didn't eat meat, but that afterwards they had to because the flood killed off the produce, hence a time of famine. I'm not a vegetarian, but that doesn't necessarily doesn't mean I don't think about it a lot.

It means what much of the word of wisdom is trying to convey: moderation in all things. Too much of anything can be bad. The overarching message of the word of wisdom is to use wisdom in what we eat and take into our bodies. Do a search for Atkins diet side effects and you will see what I mean. Eating too much meat, to the exclusion of other healthy foods is detrimental to your health. The same holds true with anything we consume, use or do.

Most of the LDS I know seem to eat about as much meat as anyone else. So I have wondered about this verse myself.

I have read all of the LDS standard works.

It sounds like the inane ramblings of a madman who thinks he's talking to god.

That's a tought call - I had my temple interview (renewal) recently and I asked about that. He said that as long as it wasn't in excess... Verse 12 says that as long as we use them sparingly and with thanks giving, it is basically ok.
