The idea should not be to punish, but to encourage better behavior. I have been raising dogs for 38 years, and never sell a pup until it is house trained, and has good manners.
I have NEVER punished a dog. they love me and respect me, and look to me as their guardian. In return, any one of them would give their life for me.
A correction, such as a firm (not yelling) 'NO' and then show them what you want them to do. when they are misbehaving, give the 'no' and ignore them.
If 'no' doesn't seem to mean anything to them, tossing a soda can with a penny in it, near them--not at them, will get their attention.
If you are CONSISTENT in your praise and reprimand, your dog will get the idea.

You didn't give the specific problem, so I only gave a general answer.... I'll check back to see if you post more details.

Oh, heelers are so hard headed, you have to be firm and consistent. Try telling her no first, then time out, and if that doesn't work, try putting her in a animal carrier by herself, but don't' leave her in there for more than about 3 to 5 minutes and make sure she has water in there...if that doesn't work, try a easy swat with a rolled up news paper, only as a last resort. What you have to do is figure out how to become the dominant animal in your partnership with her. Heelers are pretty smart and they are kind of like 2 to 5 year old human children. But if you let her get away with anything, she will walk all over you. Just make sure you reward her for good behavior. You didn't say how old she is...I presume she is a youngster. Some obedience training is a must...try PetSmart, if you don't know how to train her yourself. Remember they are bred to herd cattle, sheep etc and they will chase anything that runs, like most dogs. Consistency, rewards for good behavior and lots of one on one. Most heelers are one person dogs and you need to bond with her so she will be thrilled when you praise her and sad when you scold her. You will find she will start to anticipate your wishes. Have fun and good luck

If it is somthing that can be ignored than ignore it, they hate not getting the attention they want. For example: When he jumps on you fold your arms and look up at the ceiling, when he jumps down talk to him pet him and play with him. This will take several repititions but he will soon get the point. If it is somthing like chewing that you can't ignore, then look at him, say no and give him a chew toy. Praise him when he chews on the chew toy. They also make stuff called bitter apple if he is a serious chewer. Never punish your dog unless you catch him in the act. If you find your shoes torn up than you left your dog alone too long. Out of site = in trouble for a puppy.

Don't use her crate as punishment unless you only use it for that purpose. If you crate her when you are away from home than you don't want her to associate it with her being bad. Since the question isn't very specific this is a hard question to answer. I use the negative marker word WRONG for my dog. It is recommended to use something other than NO since that word is over-used in our daily conversations or with kids, etc. I have also utilized the spray bottle filled with water. My dog doesn't like that at all so it works well. The important thing is to be consistant.

Never, ever hit your dog. They hate the sound of newspapers so whatever she has done say"no" and slap the newspaper on a table or your leg or whatever. It won't hurt the dog if you hit it's butt with the paper but I had better luck not doing that. If you don't catch them in the act of being bad it's then too late for punishment. They have a short term memory for bad things they've done. You need a lot of patience but with lots of love you'll have better luck. Dogs want to please you so always give lots of praise when they do something right. Good Luck.

bite her ear, You sound the sensitive type, but you must know dogs all though very sweet are a pack animal, and you do not have to be mean to her, Teach her you are the top of the pack , one sift bite to her ear let it hurt, a little
you will find that you will get much better results and she will love you more for being her leader

Use a stern voice to scold her, but this only works if you catch them in the act.

Also we use a time out for our dog. At first we had to put his leash on him and tie him to a door. Now he goes there immediately when he knows he's done something wrong.

NEVER! NEVER! NEVER ! hit your dog, rub their nose in their accident or throw anything at them. This will only create fear towards you in your dog.

Hope that helps!

Punish her for what? It depends on what she has done to deserve the punishment. Be more specific.
