There were two Communist factions that took over the Government in Kabul. One faction led by Babrak Karmal and the other by Najibullah. A palace coup took place and Najibullah requested Russian help and received it. This action was taken to consolidate power and to offset the Islamic opposition in the provinces.

The Al Quida is Arab not Afghan. The Taliban started in Afghanistan. The Russians like the US wanted Afghanistan for a stratigic point to run a pipeline through most likely. The Americans trained the Taliban and gave them weapons to oust the USSR.

Having lived in Afghanistan with my Russian BF I noticed they had a lot more anamocity toward the US then to him. They would even speak Russian to him.

If it wasn't for the Russians, Afghan women wouldn't have been educated like they are. The US put the religious extremists in power.

Nope all this Al Queda s**t would never have happened if the US hadn't give billions in aid and weapons to extremist muslims in Pakistan to supposedly fight the Russians but in actual fact to look after Islamic interests on their borders. But Russia invaded to prop up a communist government in Afghanistan. Oh and Sadam was put in place by the US in the first place as well!

Russia claimed the Afghan government "invited" them to help stabilize the country.

The Soviet Union was always the rude guest who ate all the good stuff out of the refrigerator, walked with his muddy shoes on your brand new carpet and refused to leave.
