I would say it was his body telling him he couldn't make in jail and decided to take the easy way out. He probably killed himself, in that sneaky way only Ken Lay could.

Isn't it possible that he took himself out rather than face prison? It wouldn't surprise me in the least for it is the most cowardly of acts (under most circumstances).
