You take them to the vet and have them tested. The test is usually less than $20, and you can decide from there whether to get your dog treated or have them euthanized, because the treatment could kill them. It's so much easier just to keep them on preventive meds.

Have the vet test for Heartworms. If this in an adult retest after 6 months if the dog has not been on preventative. Sometimes you can get a negative result when the dog is newly infected.

Check out the vet sites for information on the subject. Have the dog checked by a vet! after a clear report, start using heartworm product to prevent heartworm.

the most accurate way is a small blood test given by your veterinarian. other symptoms include: lethargy, coughing and unwilling to exersize.
