The "Great Whore" is an apostasy, warned about several times in the epistles, and refers to a general lack of faith that has been occuring and continues to occur among Christendom.

A whore is one who betrays what is true and eternal for temporal satisfaction. No one believes in the wood, stone or gold idols from the earlier ages, but the modern idols of wealth, sex, prestige and leisure have many followers. It is far too easy to seek the empty things of this world and walk away from the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.
