What really helped me a lot when learning english was listening to music but READING THE LYRICS!, I think that helps you to relate both reading and listening, thus your brain learns to assimilate both skills. Next step is movies or tv shows with subtitles at first, there you will learn many expressions you won't learn in books or schools. Then, when you are a little more experienced quit reading the subtitles, is a little hard not to read! but try it. Of course, don't forget to get some magazines and/or books, I would say magazines are easier because they don't use uncommon words.

Most important, get along with people who actually speak the language you want to learn. If you can't then at least chat online with people who speaks that language, but listening and overcoming the fear to talk is the best you can do.

So, go and get CDs and DVDs in the language you are gonna learn, I hope I could help you, bye!

I admire your guts, you know. It's really hard to learn a new language as an adult. The old dog and new tricks kind of thing, if you get my drift. You'll of course have to start out with a course to get the basics. One great trick is to watch movies with subtitles. One language will come in through your eyes and the other through your ears. Your brain will do the work to match up word with word, expression with expression. Another one is to hang with people that speak that language or to vacation to their country. Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes or to speak like a three year old. Most people are really enchanted when they see that you are trying to speak their language, it's a way of honoring them. Insist that they answer you in their own language and not switch to English. So... hey, good luck. Go for it.

The absolute best way is to immerse yourself in the culture. If everyone around you is speaking it, you'll pick up on it and you'll learn the way they really speak (slang etc.)- not just how a textbook will tell you.
