Personally, I feel as though religion is adhering to a set of established beliefs and principles that have already been outlined, by way of a holy book, a congregation or some other establishment. However, I feel as though spirituality is the belief system that you personally adhere to when others are not watching. Spirituality is what is all your own.

This is just my opinion, however.

Spirituality is done alone, religion is done in groups. Both are based on a subjective notion of reality

Spirituality is who you are in relation to God on the inside. Religion is something you do, like go to church, light a candle, chant, whatever, it's a verb.

One old saying is:

Religion is for those who believe in hell.
Spirituality is for those who have been there (the hell of living with memories of abuse, etc).
