I am sitting in a computer lab and right above me is a sign that says 'NO coffee or beverage near the computer'. There is a man sitting near me with a coffee cup filled with hot coffee! That's not all, this man works for the school system. What kind of example is that for children? I think it's etiquette to follow people's rules--what do you think?

I really try to follow the rules. My theory is that people don't follow rules because there are so many of them out there and they aren't enforced. People see others breaking the rules and getting away with it and it encourages them to do the same. It's a form of greed. If that person can do it, why shouldn't I also be able to do it. I was at a fireworks display the other night and a group of teenagers sat down behind us and were loud, obnoxious and swearing a lot. But what could I say to them that wouldn't just encourage them to be louder ? Etiquette is learned at a young age. And for every good parent out there, there are a bunch more that don't really care.

I feel that written rules should be followed as well. I may sit at home with a drink, usually with a lid of some kind, by my computer, but I never have one by one that isn't mine. The man who works for your school system is setting a horrible example. He's probably operating under the idea that the rules are just for the kids. It shows a lack of respect on his part.

I think we, as a society, have gone a little too lax on enforcing rules. We tend to be non-confrontational and don't want to "offend" anyone. If more people spoke up and said to those who break the rules ("Hey, can't you read the sign?"- not the most polite way... but a way to get the point across!) then sure, the rule breakers would be mad, but they'd probably follow the rules more often.

I am very self centered and proud of it. In fact, I am not sure why I even took time to respond to your question.

As for the man in the computer lab, you should mind your own business. Just because some person put up a sign does not mean he has to do what it says. I have a feeling you are the one who hung the sign anyway! Perhaps the man feels he is an adult that can make his own choices.

I think a lot of people just don't care, especially if they really are not going to get into trouble for it. Then there are those who are in prison and jail because well, they just do not know how to follow rules and they need to be there. Personally I try to follow the rules because I DON'T like CONFRONTATION. Also, some people don't say anything because if you say something, you never know what the other person is going to do...hence prison and jail.

I completely agree. I think etiquette is slowly disappearing, it's not trendy. I find that not following the rules and not thinking about the common good can be particularly observed with people's consumption habits and driving in general.

I agree. I am a notorious rule-follower -- it drives my husband insane. I won't let him do half the things he "likes" to do like tossing cig butts out the window, bringing drinks where there are clearly posted signs against it, and I force him to be courteous and polite all the time.

I hope you mentioned something to this man, it is our job to keep everyone else "aware" of the "rules" since they are apparently too stupid, self-centered, or oblivious to follow them.

I do think people should follow posted rules. Usually they are there for a reason. Besides, if you are at someone else's place (public or private), it's just plain respectful.

I think people should follow rules, but since the
things are not theirs they do not care & therefore
not all people follow rules, sad for us who do & then they
ruin it for us .
