I'm trying to work out the schedules so I can take the bus to work. I want to save money on gas and reduce air pollution and global warming--and it's somewhat convenient since there is a bus stop very near my home.
Is there anyone else who does this?

FYI, I'm asking Americans specifically because that is where I live and since the car is so integrated with American culture. If people from other countries wish to comment, go ahead but just let me know where you're from. Thanks :)

Well, one of the problems generated by cars is the "urban sprawl", or the extended suburbs where it is very difficult to serve with public transport. So, that is the answer to why there are a lot of people that do car+train, car+bus or car+streetcar (light rail) instead of all the trip with public transport. And obviously the public transport do not fit to all schedules or routes. But better public transport is revitalizing decayed downtowns in several cities. Please see http://www.lightrailnow.org/ and the links to know more about public transport and cities.

I have a car but I frequently take a bus/subway into school and work. Air pollution aside, it's pretty pricey to drive everywhere that you need to go, and for a while a couple of months ago, I was spending upwards of $30 a week on gas, so I decided to go and buy a monthly bus pass for $40 a month that will let me go whereever I need to go. Since I've done this I now only spend about $10 a week on gas, at most, and only drive when I need to go somewhere quickly. If it's feasible for you to take a bus or any other public transportation, I strongly recommend it.

My father uses public transportation every day even tho he has a car. I would like to, except no buses go by my place of work. I think the biggest benifit is saving on parking. If you live in a large city, parking in the city can be around $13 a day vs $3 for the bus

Parking, parking, parking. Parking in urban areas is so limited, or expensive, and driving so stressful that I prefer to kick back and enjoy the ride on a bus, even if the ride is slower. I can listen to my iPod, read the newspaper, or take a nap if I need to. People who think the bus is too slow need to lobby for more efficient light rail or subway systems, or at least dedicated bus lanes. People should be rewarded for being part of the solution, not the problem, when it comes to alleviating congestion by taking public transit. Transit also needs to be as efficient as possible so there's more of an incentive to take it.

I use flintstone transportation, my feet, to get to work because it is close. I would love to take public transportion but in this town we have extremely limited public transportion. However, we do have many car dealerships.

I avoid public transportation as much as possible. It's inefficient for my purposes.
