I don't know if this is the answer to "why" but each Canadian postal code represents one side (ie, odd or even) of one block. That's a fair number of different codes, so they could potentially need 26x10x26x10x26x10 of them (or actually, probably not).
It's also easier to remember them that way. My old one was H2V 4H3--Have 2 Virgins 4 Happy 3somes

Well we don't have zip codes we have postal codes which are the same as the British.
