A square manhole cover can be turned and dropped down the diagonal of the manhole. A round manhole cannot be dropped down the manhole. So for safety and practicality, all manhole covers should be round.

Round manhole covers enable turning from left to right, and allow it to be taken out from any angle when at a slant.
Square ones allow only 6 worthy points from which to take off the cover (top, below, and 4-sides).
Either analysis seems alright, although may have nothing to do with why they are like that in the first place. Just me thoughts.

two reasons one has to do with it will not fall back into the manhole and second reason is it only has one stress point where a square one has 5. a square one can bend a lot easier.

Well, gee, what a lot of sticks in the damp soil.
Manhole covers are round because manholes are round. That's about it.
And they are "MANholes" because "WOMANholes" is just too nasty.

A round cover no matter how it is orientated can not fall through the open hole. A square can be turned to fall in the hole!

A round one cant fall in while a square one can. I mean do you really want to be the ****** that has to climb down there to lug it up when it falls in?! Yuck!
