a root canal could be as quick as 1 hour and go as long as 3-4 hours if it gets complicated.(most are fairly simple though)
If it's your first- as long as you have a good specialist....it's pretty painless. You'll just feel some weird sensations.

Usually it lasts about one hour to an hour and a half depending on where the tooth is.

almost an hr or more if he wants to make sure that all is correct by taking a lot of photos hurts like hell though
