Well, any drug that enters in to your body is metabolized (i.e. broken down chemically) and excreted. The liver's main function is to detoxify the blood. For instance, when you drink an alcoholic beverage, it enters in to the bloodstream and it is the job of the liver to clear it. Other drugs are no different, they enter in to your bloodsteam and the liver clears it as well. Unfortunately, certain drugs can tax the liver's ability to detoxify it. In this instance, the drug can damage liver cells.

Kidneys also are responsible for detoxifying the blood and excreting waste products via urine. It is also vulnerable to drugs and other toxins.
