placement of hooves on battle horses in paintings (1500AD-1750) what are they, dead,hurt,alive...?

in paintings of the 1500AD to mid 1700's horses that were in a battle were depicted with all fours on the ground, one front hoof up or both front hooves up. I know that one means killed in battle another means wounded in battle and the other left the battle unharmed. Which is Which?
