The worst culprit in swelling feet and lower leg is fluid retention. This is usually closely linked with hypertension. Excessive consumption of sodium and being immobile can make it worse. Medications can have edema like this as a side effect. Severe edema of the feet can also a symptom of conditions such as hypothyriodism and congestive heart failure. If your feet are swelling badly and the swelling is involving the ankles and calves I would go see a doctor.
