Cats are very very very clean animals and they have a very sensitive nose, so if the liter box smells bad they will not go there and instead will go some were next to it ( i know that your cat pees in the litter box but doesn't poop there the reason is because it takes longer to poop then to pee so the cat just goes there to tinkle ). So if the litter doesn't smell bad then maybe the litter box is over loaded with the tinkle. And about your dog, he eats the poop because dogs will eat anything. So if that doesn't work then try taking the cats poo and place it in the litter box so the cat will get to know were it should go and should not go. EXTRA: if your cat does something bad or rips the furniture then just get a spray bottle and spray the kitty when she/he does something bad.

She probably is telling you something about the litter isn't right to poop in. Try keeping th litter box extra clean or changing the type of litter. Maybe put her poop in there a few times so she gets the idea. As for Simon, he is normal - dogs love cat poop. Put the litter box on a small table that he can't reach and she can easily jum up on; she may feel safer pooping in the box knowing Simon can't get at her.

The advice given by these fine folks is great advice, the only thing I would add, in regard to the cat voiding just outside the box. Try changing kitty litter brands as well some cats will run quick-skirmish bladder or bowel voids if the brand of kitty litter that you use irritates their paws or gets annoyingly stuck between their digits. Also, if the cat consistently goes outside the box, while actually IN the box it would probably help to more conscientiously scoop anything from the middle of the box as the cat may not wish to dump in a spot that's already used.

As for the dog...well...the covered litter box with the opening facing the wall is a good idea, as is keeping the litter box dog-proofed.

Is the cat food laying around so the dog can get into it?? If so this is the reason why the dog will eat the bowel. It has some similar taste and smell as a bowel and the dog will eat it right up! Your cat may have some wierd habbit of just not wanting to go into the litter box after it has been used once. Or it could be a territorial thing with your dog, that she may not want him going in there after she has used it.

Nasty. Maybe so. You could try seperating the dog from the litter box. Put the box in a place the dog can't get to. Maybe create a small space for the litter box only accessible through a cat door - something a dog can't fit through if he's not too small.

Does your cat have long hair? Maybe it starts out as a "clinger" and then falls off as she is exiting, or maybe she's standing on the side of the box not realizing where she's aiming. I think if it had to do with the dog she wouldn't be urinating in the box either, but you should probably train the dog to leave that whole area alone. Tell him "not your room" or "no kitty poops" and stay consistant with keeping him away from the box

Sadie probably knows that your dog likes the poop so she probably is thinking that she doesn't need to use the litter box because your dog basically cleans it up when it eats the poop.

You should ( if you can, put in a cat door) into the room you keep the cat litter box in. This will keep the dog out and from eating the cat poop. If your cat is pooping outside the box make sure it is kept clean (some cats wont use a dirty box) and keep the box in a corner. You can set news paper along side of the box to make it easy to clean up. Also try to watch your cat if you see them going to the box...to make sure they go in, grab them and put them in the box if they start to go outside of it. Good luck!

1) Get a covered litterbox and place the opening facing the wall, about 6-8 inches from it (just wide enough gap that your cat can get in, but the dog can't)!

2) Scold the cat when it poops on the floor (stick it's nose in it and say "no", then place it in the litterbox)!

3) Scold the dog when it tries to go near the litterbox!

You may have to spray something around the litterbox that the cat doesn't like, your local pet shop should sell various "stay away" or "no go" type products! We used bleach around ours, but ours was on a cement basement floor, obviously you can't do that since yours is on carpet!

I think it's because the box smells like the dog. Cats need the territory that they go to the bathroom in to be their own. You have to keep the dog out of the box.
