I live in texas I was at the movies yesterday and couldn't find my cell phone so I was going to make a call at the pay phone booth, I put 50cts to make the call and its says i need to put in $1.85, so I used the other pay phone thinking it was in error and then again I put my 2 quarters in and said the samething. Our they charging more now? I know it was just a regular pay phone booth, because I made sure of it. Anyone having problems with the samething in ur state and mine?

Payphones operated by the local phone company are pretty reasonable, usually. However, it's possible for the mall or movie theater to own that payphone, which means the service has to go through another company before it gets to the regular phone service, and they will charge you MEGA. They don't even let you dial an 800 number for free, so your calling card doesn't work. They will happily charge the call to your credit card (very expensive).

Pay phones lose money because of lack of use, the cell phone has changed that. I remember when pay phones were 10 cents. Very few people use them, so they have to charge more. A lot of children do not even know what a pay phone is. (Oh, I live in Texas also, but it applies all over).

I haven't used a payphone since they started charging .50 cents. It used to be a quarter.
