My advice is to ensure you have a policy that covers EACH CONDITION for life- covering your pet for life is not the same thing. If a condition is only covered for 12 months from its start you will end up paying your vet fees for things such as heart problems, skin problems or arthritis which last for much longer than one year, as well as your premiums. Pet Plan offer lifetime cover for each condition so do Pet pals and pet protect, companies such as direct line, more than and tesco only cover a condition for 12 months, although they cover your pet for life. These policies can be a false economy as they end up not paying out for things when you need them to most. The other thing to consider is that if your pup has had any illness or problems treated at a vets already, most insurance companies will exclude these things from future cover where as pet plan are already covering him. I would seriously consider continuing your pet plan cover, they are one of the best and most reliable companies.

My dog is insured with Tesco Pet Insurance. She had a bad accident a couple of years ago and had to have specialist surgery as a result. I had to pay the vet and then claim the money back from Tesco but they were very prompt to pay and also helpful on the phone for any queries. However, there is a maximum pay-out of £2500 per condition/injury/whatever, I have to pay the first £50 of any course of treatment (this is usual), and the premium has gone up every year though not by much. My dog is now 6 years old and I pay £9.40 per month. I also took my dog abroad for 2 months and was able to "upgrade" the insurance to cover all sorts of additional things. This was easy (a phone call) and relatively cheap (around £5 per month extra I think, but a bit hazy on that so don't take my word for it!). Not sure whether this is any use to you but I hope so!

I have 2 GSD's and a cross breed and I use Direct Line, I pay £23 a month for 3 dogs, a lot of companies don't like insuring GSD's because of the hip dysplasia problem, Direct Line never flinched when I contacted them, they are a bit slow paying out, one of my dogs was bitten by an Adder a couple of years ago we paid the vets bill then it took 3 months but we got every penny minus the excess so can't really grumble,I would certainly recommend them.

open a 2nd bank account and put the amount it would cost u a month 4 a pet plan in 2 it ,u r then saving money and the likelyness of having 2 use it 4 any vet bills is very slim because most of the plans will not pay out under £80 & vet bills r usaly less than that

Petplan are good because they carry on treatment for a condition eg arthritis, that carries on year after year . Some companies don't if you claim for arthritis one year thats it you can't the next be careful.
I use them and am glad cus my pup needs constant treatment, if I was with another company I'd have got nothing out of them this year.
The meds are £15 a month and petplan pay no problem straight to the vet if you want .

Ask your vet, they will know which ones pay up! Theres 2 main types of policy, one where they deal with the vet directly - much easier for you - and one where you have to pay the vet and then claim the money back. I'd go for the first.

good luck
they are all reasonable I would go with what you vet recommends they usually go for one that pays the vet directly as it cuts out the hassle of you paying and then waiting for weeks for your money
