I just got my pug about 4 days ago. He seems like he's happy, and is getting along with everyone well. From the first day we got him, I noticed his nails needed cut real bad. They started getting caught in the carpet too. When me and my mom tried to, he would draw his paw back like it hurt. Did it really hurt...or do they just not like people playing with their paws or nails? I also noticed they're a litte black. I'm not sure if it's dirt (since he was previously kept outside) or an infection.

Thank you!! Every reply was helpful! The pug is around 5 years actually....and another thing...for some reason he will not eat out of a bowl. We have to hand feed him!

I have had my little pug for 4 years. He hates having his nails cut. He screams out in pain. You can hurt them, but they also scream. You might want to have the vet or groomer teach you how to do it properly. My little one has caught them in things and torn them off. It hurts. He pulls his paws back also. Pugs need to be cared for differently than other dogs. You need to clean their eye area and ears also. Mine is more sensitive than other dog breeds I have had. He is loving just is scared of stuff like that. He has never been abused they just do not seem to be able to tollerate it as well. He cries and wiggles at the vet also.
My pugs nails are black. He is the fawn variety. That is just the color. To be sure you should check with a groomer or vet. You should look on line to learn about pugs or get a book. They are so wonderful but they are different. Also do not spank them they cannot tollerate it. And do not let anyone even a kid bump them on the back of the head. There eyes can pop out.
They are extremely temp sensitive and cannot tollerate cold or hot. Mine stays inside and uses a dog door to relieve himself. Some people use pet pads for them to use for waste. Just keep an eye on your pup he can get problems from the wether. They cannot regulate temperature well.
Best wishes these are very sweet loving doggies and they are a real gift. They only get sweeter as the grow up and the more love you give them the sweetier they get. They really bond and have so much personality.

How old is your pug? If the nails are real long, it sounds as if whoever had him did not trim them like they should, which means he is not used to having them cut. Some dogs have black nails which can make them harder to cut since you need to watch for the quick so that you don't hurt him and make him bleed. The longer you go without cutting the nails, the longer the quick will grow, so you may not be able to cut them very short at first. You will have to gradualy and frequently cut them to get them to the desired length. As with anything that they are afraid of, offer lots of praise and treats during and after cutting. I also wait until our puppy is sleeping and trim her nails then. Sometimes I do not get them all at once, but half at a time is better than none! Good luck!

I realize you are satisfied with most of the answer but there is something missing.... mine.

Sometimes a dog just doesn't like you touching his feet is SOMETIMES true. There is a reson though. At some point in his life someone may have cut too far and hit his vein or nerve. This was only the start. My puppy (black lab) had his feet cut by me. Each time he was scared but w/ progression he was fine.

I comforted him while I cut and then called him good boy and gave him a treat when I was done.

As for the eating thing try this. Hald your hand over the bowl w/ food in place. Drop a few in there and let him eat from hand and bowl. Over time w/ praise and a treat for eating out of the bowl he will become used to it.

I hope it works.... I LOVE DOGS.... oh just for the sake of it my puppy was a Christmas present and his name is Prince. :O)

When I first got my pug he whimpered like a baby every time we would go to get his nails cut. He would squirm around and kick his legs whenever he saw the clippers. The vet told me that they always have trouble with pugs getting their nails clipped. It doesn't hurt them at all (unless they are clipped too short and start to bleed). They are just finicky that way. It helps if you give them a lot of praise and attention when you are going to do it.
My vet also suggested that I just file them with a nail file. This will keep their nails short and require less cutting.
My pugs nails are black - it can be a normal coloring on a pug.

My 2 year old pug doesn't care for her nails being cut. I think the ''clipping'' sound scares her. We bought a dremmel (the electric nail file like they have at nail salons) and she prefers that. Also, it is safer to file rather than clip because you don't risk cutting the quick. Her nails are black as well... I don't think you need to worry about that. Good luck with your pug... they are the best dogs!

Most dogs don't like getting their nails cut or really having anyone mess with their paws in general. Practice with him by just looking at them. The more comfortable he gets with this the easier it will be to get his nails cut. BTW no it doesn't hurt, but be careful not to cut the quick, and keep stopquick around in case you do bc they will bleed forever.

Some dogs just don't like you to touch their feet. If you do not feel comfortable you can take him to a groomer or your vet and they can do it for you. This is a good idea if you are not sure how short to clip the dogs nails. If you cut them too short they can bleed alot and most times it can be hard to stop the bleeding.

well all dogs really dont like it, but if you start cutting their nails at a young age they can learn that it is not a bad thing. The first time you can go to a groomer or a place like petco and get it done. then they can show you how to do it for next time.
good luck! :)
