There is a certain beauty in abstract art, it is all in the details. Just like there is a certain beauty to every thing in the world. If you don't like it that is fine, why judge those who do. Maybe they connect with it in some way. All art has the potential to be beautiful, even abstract art.
Your comment reminds me of a book I read, Number 6 Fumbles, the narrator comments on art/art history by wanting to shout out, "The Emperor has no clothes!" You should read it I think you would like it.

But it is all a matter of opinion, is it not.
So a bunch of yuppies get together and call an 'atypical' piece of work, abstract art.
Yet the prudes with their panties in a bunch say it is not.
Does it really matter. People enjoy making it, others enjoy purchasing it.
Art is part of culture. Culture is ever evolving.
No, I do not think they are like the emperor without clothes.
He had no clothes because he was all about materialism and ego whereas art, regardless of form, is about expression.

I was at an exhibition of abstract art in east london once and saw an attendant take a sculpture made up of shoes out of a box and wander off to set it up. He left the box on the floor. Some moments later I saw a couple staring at it. I went to join them. They were talking about what a brilliant piece it was, lonely and discarded with no label. Even though I knew it was a mistake, i decided to join in and soon found that i agreed with them. As a piece of art it was brilliant, but then, so is a tree or a piece of chewing gum left ona table in the right light. Art is what you choose to frame. Why wear clothes at all?

No, there is beauty in abstract art even if there is no distinct form. People can appreciate colour and the way it is juxtaposed with others: contrast and harmony, shape and shadow...
Have you looked at a sunset before? It is beautiful. If you exclude the circle of the sun, the rest of a sunset is just colour and pattern. This is an abstract scene, and it is beautiful. You don't have to have an exact representation of a recognizable object to have beautiful art.

No. I think that people who like abstract art are more like a totalitarian manifestation.
They're not the live and let live type. Worse yet, there's an underlying current of denial.
Worse than that, they've got this imperious little attitude that says only they count and the rest of us are the great unwashed.
I guess Mark Rothko cut his wrists for a reason. I doubt it was anything like being crazy or anything.

It's a question of taste. A cousin of mine really loves the paitings of Kandinsky. I only like a couple of works by him. There is some abstract art out there that I like. It's not my favorite type of art.

I think that in a way some of them have been duped but then again there are people out there who see the hectic curves of the lines and smudges and what not and relate to these pieces emotionally and aesthetically (but these people probably have deep rooted issues).

it depends. I really love some abstract art and other pieces i think look like total crap. Especially when someone literally just paints a canvas one color.

I think people buy abstract art because it unintrusively fits into their home decor. A realism style picture draws more attention to itself.
