I believe it dates back to the biblical occurence with the taking of the Apple of Knowledge.

You are correct - sin is the root - the specific part you are looking for is "Greed" - listed as one of the seven deadly sins, all of which seem to have their root in pride - placing ourselves and our interests above others.

i believe that it is a learned behavior. not everyone steals. but it also has to do with ideas of ownership and possession.

as for the biblical occurence, many mythologies have a story of a human or another animal stealing fruit (symbolic and literal) from the gods or another human for reasons of acquiring knowledge or power (or both).

I don't think that it is human nature to steal beyond your basic needs. I think it's social conditioning from being in a consumeristic society that encourages people to acquire more and more. Most people aren't sure about the difference between needs and desires these days, every commercial out there tries to convince you that you 'need' that company's product.

But I also think that some people do develop greed as a character trait which makes them more likely to steal.

Excitment, something that gives you a rush. People are always attracted to the forbidden. I know when I drink too much, if it isn't tied down I'm taking it! Thats why bars have everything nailed to the wall. I have been casing my neighbors large outdoor rooster for some time, but that I cant explain.

well you take celebrities that steal or rich kids , they do it for the attention, or cause they think nobody would suspect them, or that they are above the law

actually i've heard that statistics says that no american has shop lifted even just for once...well..maybe it's just their nature.....coz stealing in my place is like..not really common...
