I think they can be a great thing. In our society today we do things completely backward. We meet someone, get to know them a little bit then have sex with them. Thus we generally equate sex with love. When the sex dries up, most people think the love dries up as well, but they don't understand what love is.

In an arranged marriage, you are forced, so to speak, to get to know this other person as a friend. You develop a respect for the person and love develops and is constant in the relationship. NOt a bad way to do things, I think. Perhaps more toward this end of relationship devleopment than the looseness of American standards.

You know, there's a statement of course, it's a bit controversial but it goes like this. In a love marraige, you love first and the problems come later (usually after marraige). But in an arranged marraige, you fight in the beginning and learn to love later. Arranged marraige is not something that hasn't been seen by the western World - they've done it themselves on many accounts (read about royal alliances through marraige). It's just that such marraiges are becoming less common there, I suppose.

I think they're something we just don't understand or choose not to understand.

I'm sure they can be all of the above. Some work, some don't. It's like any other marriage really.

All that being said, I don't knock anyone that is in an arranged marriage or will be in the future, I just know that they're not for me.

I suppose that if it's your culture, it could work for you. I can see that it would save you a lot of effort and anguish in the dating field, but might gain more effort and anguish in the trying to make the marriage work field. Myself, I'm too much of a hopeless romantic to buy into it.

I would never do it, but that is because I was not raised in a scoiety where that is normal. I'm sure someone from a culture where it is normal are much more understanding.

I'd like to have some say in the matter. If I don't like what I see, let's move on. Far. And fast.

i dont like having arranged marriages... i think that they are stupid and that people should marry whomever leases them! they shouldnt be forced to marry someone they dont want to marry!
