And my questions are not racist. They are serious. I'm trying to learn the history of civil rights in America.

I have no idea. Must be a Christianity question -- I'm Jewish. In Judaism, everyone has a complete soul. "Why did God make only one Adam?" Asks the Talmud. The Answer? "So that no one may say, 'My ancestors are greater than yours.'" Race is simply not an issue in Jewish theology. (Maimonides, one of our greatest philosophers, was black. So what? The only reason European Jews are light-skinned in because they were raped by Crusaders and other during the Middle Ages. Since Jewishness traces through the mother, the children of such unions were considered full Jews and married other Jews, etc. Now granted, individual Jews can be prejudiced like anyone else, but theologically, there is no basis for it in our religion.)

Back to the soul: This could also refer to a medieval kabbalistic mystical doctrine about five levels of the soul:

1-Nefesh, life force of the body

2-Ruach, emotional level

3-Neshamah, intellect level

4-Chayah, Living Spirit

5-Yechidah, Unity with God

Kabbalah is originally a Jewish teaching, and these terms are originally Hebrew. Again I stress: Among Jews, this has nothing to do with race. However, during the Middle Ages, kabbalistic texts entered the Christian world through groups like the Rosicrucians, the Masons, the Templars, etc. and were re-interpreted to their ideas. There are some non-Jewish Gnostic and occult writings that make racial connections, claiming that certain races (and in some cases, women) have only the lower 3 levels (body-emotions-mind) but not the higher spiritual levels. This MIGHT be a clue to find what you are looking for regarding "3/5 of a soul." It is possible that from these occult sources, the idea indirectly entered Christian folklore in 19th-century America. Hope this helps.

People - check this guy's 360 before criticising him.

In an effort to prevent slave-owners gaining seats in government, it was declared that only 60% of their population of slaves (of any race) would count.

It is nothing to do with soul.
