Every 6 months for all of her life, unless she has a litter of puppies, and then her 'period' will be detained for 4 months longer on that cycle.

A dog's period, or also called "heat" cycle is usually every 4 to 6 months....dogs can vary. The heat cycle usually lasts 3 weeks, with the female accepting males only in that middle week. If your dog would accidentally get pregnant, and you go to a vet and have your dog given a "mismating injection", that'll keep the ferilized egg cells from implanting, but will also extend the heat period....sometimes for up to almost 2 months. The only way to stop a dog's heat cycle is to get her spayed, and to make sure they take out the ovaries too. Best of luck to you.........

Starting from 6-12 months in age, they usually go into heat every 6 months. I have seen slightly shorter cycles, and some that go every 8-10 months, but every 6 months is the most common. They will go through their cycles throughout their lives, though some dogs have their heat cycles slow down as they age.
Of course, if you get her spayed, the cycles will cease. It will also decrease or eliminate her chances of getting certain types of cancer or a potentially deadly uterine infection later on in life.

Edit: And Corbutt is right. Females can pull each other out of rhythm. I've seen it happen more than once.

A general answer would be about twice a year;However large breeds tend to go a little longer between seasons and in the case of a female whose given birth figure 6 months after she weans the pups.Another factor is general health In an unhealthy dog this timing can vary.Of course if she is spayed,not ever..Even emotions can play a part.If a female is around another that is in season she could come into season early.Hope this helps inform.
