I believe it is because of the world we are in. We are born into sin, we live amongst it everyday. With sin comes all the suffering we constantly see in the media and our own environments. It all comes down to faith. Faith is the substance of things unknown. To have complete faith means that you chose of your own free will to believe. It is hard at first, but with that choice you come into a new existence, a new way of living that surpasses everything you have known. Prayer is something you can start right now. Because there is no proof. How can I believe in something when there isn't a single shred of credible evidence to support it's existence.
Say I were to tell you that I had a winged unicorn in my backyard that coughs up gold coins, would you believe me without any sort of proof? No, of course not, that would be stupid.

Same goes for your magical sky-pixie. I won't take your word for it nor will I believe the word of a poorly written book of bronze-age jewish mythology either. I want and need actual and credible proof.

Just like it is hard to believe in aliens. People can't believe for sure what they cannot see or touch. One thing that helps me keep my belief is the kindness and love I see in people, the emotions I feel in my mind and heart, an infant so sweet, children laughing, the green grass growing, the beautiful skies and wonderful thunderstorms--just everything falling in place so perfectly....these things cannot be just a coincidence

A lot of people don't believe in God because they can't see him. You can't see air but you kow it is there. People may also believe that it is God that allows the suffering, but it is Satans doing, he is the ruler of this world and God did give us free will, so it is also mankind causeing the pain and suffering.
