Your parents are right, but not for the reasons they think. Go to college and start in the performance industry. There are many places in college towns that will allow you to sing. Live mike nights, comedy club openers, karaoke, the only way to learn is to get in front of an audience every night and do it.
You can major in musical theatre or opera or take chorus; all available to someone wanting to sing. The problem with many singers today is they don't know their range and what songs will work with their voice. How do you stretch your voice without hurting it? How do you sing for days on end without getting polyps on your vocal chords? All of those things may be learned at school as well as the backup of a degree.
What connections do you have? Go to college and you will be able to go to the campus radio station and ask to sing jingles. Go to the campus TV station and find who writes adds and get them to write you songs.
I have been in the business for 30 years doing voice overs and on camera work etc... You have never heard of me nor would you know my face if you saw me. This "famous" thing bothers me. Your main goal will be just to make a living at your art. That is great to be able to do. Good luck out there.

I think you should always have a back-up plan. There are so many people who want to be a singer and the competition is extreme. Going to college, vocational school, etc. is having a back-up plan. If you are serious about becoming a singer you will need professional training AKA classes. You can attend a performing arts school with your main vocal focus (classical opera, etc) Good luck and remember to keep all of your options open.

Plan on going to college and getting a life, and then you can audition for American Idol and talent contests in your spare time. Don't rely on dreams. Being a famous singer is like a childhood thing, and there's a slim chance you'll go huge. Try to put it out of your mind and concentrate on education. That's whats most important.

You parents are playing it safe, and you should think about having a backup as well. You can go to college and make them happy and still follow your dreams. Go to business school, that will help you when you sign your first big contract, and also open doors if the singing career doesn't work out. You should follow your dreams, but still play it smart, I promise you, that you won't regret going to college in the long run. It will also open some doors to take singing classes.

I'm a musician, so I believe I'm very competent to give you a sincere and professional advice. Please, heed the advice of your parents to further your studies even beyond the college level. Nevertheless, I won't subscribe to forcing a particular course on you other than music. Go on lady, study music to a university level if you could. You will eventually discover that techniques and skills are very vital tools when such are got the experts. Cheers!

College is a big help. you get a chance to improve your voice and learn more about music. Plus, some colleges have recording studios that you can use for free and some professors know people who own labels. When I was in hgih school, my friend's friend from college introduced me to his label.
