I'm just curious as to how many people have quit smoking in the last several years, and how you did it.

I'm an ex-smoker of over 4 years-- cold turkey...

Congratulations!

Cold turkey is the best way to quit, hands down.

Yes, I smoked for 23 yrs. I wanted to quit smoking for a long time before I actually did.

I was in the hospital and couldn't smoke for 4 days, while in the hospital I decided I MIGHT quit, but would take 1 day at a time.

The first thing that I did that aided in my success was not to tell anyone. If you do, people drive you nuts asking how it's going. After a week, and I had gotten use to the idea myself, anyone who hadn't noticed I was able to tell them and they weren't as apt to bug me since I'd alreay had a week of success.

The next thing was, each night I'd sit on the edge of the bed before going to sleep and take a deep breath and I was breating better each day and I would say, " Well, I made it through another day " Every day and week it got easier.

It was in the fall. I started by sucking on lollipops all the time and carring around a glass of ice to munch on. And oh, my goodness the candy canes I went through at Christmas time that year. After a while I gave up these little pacifiers and i had officially succeded.

The only two down falls from it was, It's been 5 1/2 years now, and I did gain some weight which I am working on getting off now and I gave up coffee, because a cup of coffee didn't mean that much to me without the ciggarette.

Sorry this was long, but it's my story and it's true. Anybody can do it, if they truly want to. Good Luck!!!

I quit cold turkey, also, for a year now. It's still a battle when I get really stressed out. On my last pack I just made a commitment that this would be the last one no matter how many I smoke a day of it. I ended up feeling like I was really on the last limbs of it and smoked only 1-3 cigs a day and drew it out as long as I could. Then the last one was it...in it's stale nasty Newport glory. I haven't touched one since. I just had to stay away from people who smoke and don't do things that will prompt a cig. Everything feels like normal now.

I was a smoker about 6 months ago and I quit cold turkey. For me I had to keep busy with cleaning or walking my son in his stroller. I realized that I was smoking instead if doing things that I enjoyed to do like: reading, walking, scrapbooking. Now I am always finding new things to do and I havent had the craving since.

Nicotine patches, hypnotism and about a million other ways which most of the times don't work. You could try them though. You have to really want to quit, otherwise I don't believe it can happen. Personally I found keeping busy very useful and going to the gym. If you're at home for example most of the time, your mind always goes to it. Somehow working out made me not wanting to smoke. Also I found it impossible with all my friends being chain smokers. I mean what's the point of not smoking if you inhale 5 people's smoke anyhow. I had to change my social habits too. Try joining a gym. Good luck x

when my period was delayed for 2 weeks, i just quit. i knew i might be pregnant. and i was right.
i knew it if i was pregnant, i had to quit. i just quit. so there wasn't any withdrawal symtoms at all.
no craving too as there was something to distract me...i was going to be a mother! i was busy reading some babycare books, buying maternity wears, looking for baby products...etc
do something tat u r interested, like join a gym membership. pay for it and u wont want to waste the money.
i quit for 8 years now. and i never pick up a single stick since then. cos i keep reminding myself....if i lit one stick of cigarette..there will be a second one, a third one, .....and more and more.
well, children keep me busy, no time to think of having this habit again.

good luck.

My dad quit when my mom was pregnant with me because a colleague told him that if he continued he would have a disfigured, mentally retarded baby.
