It depends on what kind of person you are. If you would like running around with your dog then you should get an energetic dog. It also depends on where you live. If you live in a house with a big backyard, then you can get a bigger dog. (if you have a high fence you should rescue a grey hound. more than 3000 die each year : (

The best dog to get depends on what your situation is. If you get an active dog like a terrier or a large dog like a Lab then you need a fenced yard. If you live in an apartment, without a yard, then you're better off getting a small dog like a Yorkie or a Chihuahua.

Also, how much time to you plan to spend with the dog? Terriers and larger dogs require a lot of time and energy. Some people want a quiet lap dog, and others want a very active dog. The best thing to do is go to the AKC website at www.AKC.org and research the different breeds, and find the one that would be most suited to you.

Get a dog from your local dog pound, any dog just get them there. Many breeds are found there and often mixed breed dogs are heartier and make the best pets due to the mix of personality traits from the various bloodlines in there make up. the fees are normally small and you can know you have saved a pet from being destroyed. I have never gotten a pet from there that was not a wonderful animal and most have lived long healthy lives.

Since you are considering a pet, please put serious thought into what type of companion you will be for the dog rather than which breed is better. Dogs need companionship, some breeds will even become clinically depressed if you leave them alone for extended periods of time. That includes the time you are at work. A bored and lonely dog is destructive to his environment and can even present physical symptoms, the same as a clinically depressed person. Please do not get a pet from ANY pet store. They purchase their animals from puppy mills who are only in it for the money, not the good of the breed. Check with the reputable breeders in your area.

My favorite large dog is the Golden Retriever. For a small dog, I would go with a Pomeranian or something in the Terrier family.

Go to the American Kennel Club and view the size and characterists of dogs...it is important that you know this....where you live, the size of your home, apartment etc., they will tell you anything you want to know...it is important that you do this so you do not get a dog that is not right for you. Also go to a dog pound and see if you can adopt.

Depends on your needs, your living environment, if you have children, etc. For an apartment, I think the best dog is a cavallier spaniel. If you have a yard and want a bigger dog, you can never go wrong with a well-bred golden retriever.

pembroke welsh corgi. they are great with kids, love their masters, and know how to make someone laugh. they are good off their leash, get along well with other animals, are good watchdogs, like to swim, like to run, can not over feed it will make them really fat and that is bad for their backs, will allways look out for you, and sheds moderately, but not too much.
i have had one for a year now, he is a sweetheart, one of the best dogs i've ever had.
also, if you are planning on getting a puppy, DO NOT USE THE PEE-PADS, they will think that it is ok for them to pee on your carpet

also, think about getting a shelter dog, they are allways great!!!
