How long will I be able to be there without a job? Where are some good places to live, if not on the island, close enough to where I could access it daily? How should I go about finding a place to live? Finally, I'm a graphic designer with one year of experience...think I could land a job? Where should I start looking?

Well,

Your in for the time of your life. Moving to the best city in the world in hopes of landing your dream job.

First off, if you just have $4000, you might be able to live IN Manhattan for about 2 months if you find a great deal for an apartment (either a small studio down in the village or more uptown). But depending on how you go about to get an apartment, there may be fixed terms of 1 year or 6 months.

But the problem doesn't stop there. You also need to have a good credit history as most real estate agencies do credit checks and more and more are starting to require proof of employment, so you might be in a pickle in that one.

My recommendation, if you want to be close to the city, try living in Brooklyn/queens. Take the subway daily to Manhattan (maybe a 15-20 min ride). Cheaper housing and you may be able to last a little longer.

If you want to be situated in a place for as long as possible, try finding an apartment out in Long Island (Nassau County is prob best bet...40 minute train ride). Studio/Apts can go for $800-1000. And the LIRR runs constantly to the city.

That takes care of living.

As far as trying to get job, print out 100 resumes, search online, e-mail firms/agencies. Being that this is graphics involved, have a sweet portfolio ready. Also check out the employment page in newyork.craigslist.org ... I seem to recall a number of ads wanting graphic designers (though don't hold me to that). But there are more than enough postings to sift through.

Good luck.

I've lived in NY my entire life and I tell you that 4,000 will last you about 2 months if you get an apartment in the city. Your best bet is to look in Brooklyn for an apartment and get a job quickly. Start looking up jobs in Manhattan. Try Monster.com Do you know anyone in NY? Are you coming alone? Maybe you should come with someone so that you can split the rent. Apartments go for 1,500 + Wish you the best. Please be careful there are alot of crazy people out there.

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible because is a big city like you will find with Hotelbye . In New York you will see the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and significantly more. Empire State Building causes it to be worth braving the extended lines, high admission rates and dizzying heights to see the town from a premier this storied building. Built in 1931, the skyscraper may be the second-tallest developing in New York and is one of the very most immediate symbols of Gotham, therefore significantly to ensure that it's performed a function in films such as for instance King Kong, An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle.

dont go. $4000 in the city will last about a month. you might go longer if you live outside of manhattan. You have to pay rent on the apartment plus the security in the 1st month. then you will need clothes to interview in. You are going to have to get at least one professional looking outfit to interview in. Food, entertainment, transportation (cab, bus, subway, etc.), furniture, etc. And if you don't need furniture because you have, then factor in moving expenses.

$4000 is not alot to have to come to NYC. I'd get a job first and setup interviews from where you are and then come into the city for those.

Find employment first, which will in turn make it easier to find an apartment (proof of employment) - or find a roomate. Not only will it save you money, but they'll introduce you to their friends or at least give you an insiders track on the city.

Never listen to naysayers - if something is telling you to move to NYC, then you'll figure out a way to get there. Good Luck!

Yep. Move to New Jersey first. One year of experience won't get you much. I have friends who work for The Wall Street Journal and can't afford to live in NYC! Start in Jersey and work your way over to NY!

Oh...go onto careerbuilder.com or something and post/upload your resume and get it to as many places you can. Sometimes corporations employ in-house graphics people for advertising, etc., so leave no stone unturned.

Not long enough. With $4000, don't even think about trying to living in Manhattan

Good luck honey, find a roomate, look in Queens, and 4,000 will not last long. Look on Craigslist.com
