Learning the responsibility of working regularly happens at different ages for different people. I'd say 16 and not working isn't so bad, but by 18 she should find a job somewhere. Even if not planning to be a career woman, it is healthy to see the working life before really passing into adulthood.

It is not BAD but it is a good idea for her to get a job and learn to work so that she doesn't depend too much on others as she gets older. Personally, I was very proud and relieved when I finally became financially independent. I think that having worked since the age of 14 gave me the work ethic I needed to complete my education, work in my chosen profession, and achieve financial independence.

well, despite her mothers condition. here in california and probably in many states there are alot of restrictions and laws about minors working. therefore a lot of companies or workplaces don't want to deal with those restrictions, this makes it harder for even a sixteen year old to get a job. plus the minimum age out here is 15 and you're barely allowed to work. but it's not like she's a thirtey year old living off her mother. besides she's a teenager, you can't expect her to have the mentality of an adult but the body of a teenager.

In my country (Greece) you're actually supported by your family until you graduate university and get a job or get married. I live in England now and quite a lot of teenagers here have jobs to earn pocket money. If you don't have to work and your family can support you then there's no shame in it. However if there is a person in the family who needs care and could use the extra income, thumbs up if everyone's trying to do their part.

No not at 16, but it is time to maybe start looking for a job before to much longer. There are some places that will not hire someone that is just 16.

I'm confused...who gets a check? Who is disabled? I think it might be kind of bad for anyone who is healthy and 16 to not work simply because they will not get a lot of work/life experience unless they get a job.

I know of a lot of 16 year olds that didn't have a job. There will be plenty of years to work later on in life, then that's all you do is work.

I personally don't think that anyone under the age of 18 should HAVE to work. Work is a huge responsibility that will consume most of us for most of our lives. There's no need to begin early.

Is it bad to not have a job - not necessarily. Is it bad not to have a strong work/study ethic, or not be willing to work - most definitely. Often people don't work because they don't want to work (l-a-z-y). If I won the lottery I wouldn't work, but I'd have to find a constructive use of my time.

Being employed doesnt hurt anyone. It gives one a sense of responsibility. And sooner or later she's gonna wanna a driver's license and a car to drive. When that time comes, then she should have the means to take care of those things herself.
