My mother took very expensive drugs to wipe out her immune system for the last decade of her life, because she had Rheumatoid Arthritis, and that's how she died...this, after years of misery from constantly being ill. (It was like, "Do you want to die from the RA, or do you want to die from something else? " It was truly a frying-pan-or-fire situation with her, and seeing her die like that made me reassess my opinion of a LOT of medical procedures--including transplants.)
