By 1997 Chrysler had a lot of the "bugs" worked out on the neon.
95 was the 1st model year.
If you are looking for a safe car to get her around in-town and the vehicle comes with at least some maintenance records, I would say the neon is just as reliable as any other american made sedan in its price range. Keep in mind that this vehicle is 10 years old.

If you are looking for a mechanically sound car for more extensive driving that is about the same size I would reccomend something else:
Honda Civic or Accord, Toyota Corolla, or a Nissan Altima or Sentra would be a far better choice.

They are cheap cars to purchase, but they are really bad on head gaskets, remeber that the Doge Neon , and Plymouth Neon are the same, one isn't better than the other. If your looking for a cheap transportation my advice is to buy her a Geo Prism. Prism's are made by Toyota, all it is a Toyota Corrola with Checvy stickers on it. You can buy a Prism cheaper than a Corrola even though it is the same car. Put them side by side an you will see they are identical. Save some money and get a depndable car.

Take m advice they are one of the worst cars to buy. I knew someone who had that model, it has flaws in the electrical unit and the engine. I would not even look at that anymore, unless you hate your wife. In the same category there is Chevy Cavalier, that's a much better car, better engine and should be in the same price category. Good luck!!!

Alls I can tell you is that Ford is notorious for having engine problems and Chevy is notorious for having transmission problems. I don't know much about Dodge, except that the RAM is a good truck. I'm not into American cars.

No! I think the most problem you will encounter is the tranny of the car.
