Steroids like prednisone commonly cause changes in mood and attitude. This will pass as he takes it longer or goes off of the medication, i have taken this and he doesnt have control over it be patient with him and when he comes off of it he will be back to normal. Good Luck.

I have long term experience with prednisone. I feel for your difficulty, but please let me explain something to you.

The person on prednisone will have no awareness that he/she is acting differently. To them, they are being completely normal, and everyone else is at fault.

I first used prednisone as a 6 month old child, and my parents reported that every time I was on the drug my behavior changed in exactly the way you are describing. It tends to be much worse for those who are close to the patient, but conflict with co-workers is not uncommon.

The meanness and rudeness are very much the result of the drug; you may also notice that the person's tone becomes very sharp and hyper-critical. All I can tell you is he is almost certainly unaware of it.

Hopefully, his use of this medication is short term; I was on long term prednisone -- nearly 4 years uninterrupted use in the most recent case. I'm not sure how my wife put up with me.

In addition, long term use suppresses the production of testosterone, loss of sexual drive, depression, and can cause significant intestinal swelling and weight gain, as well as hair loss. All of these are likely to make him more irritable.

Yes, corticosteroids do have an effect on personality. Corticosteroids are not to be confused with androgenic steroids, from whence the "roid rage" got it's name. (nor confused with the rage that comes with hemorrhoids);-)

Some people get happy, some get sexually aroused, and some get angry.

Myself, I got real bitchy and cranky. Some cognitive understanding may help him, and you, cope with this most unpleasant side effect. Also, be willing to give him space. If you can convince him that it is the drugs affecting his tolerance levels, maybe he will be willing to just go into another room, and sequester himself from the rest of the family, until the feeling subsides.

Prednisone is a steroid, and I'm sure you've heard of "roid rage". I was on prednisone for about 3 months, and man, was I hostile!! I think counselling wouldn't really help someone who is under the influence of such a powerful medication. Hopefully he can get off of it??

talk to his doc about his side effects, there may be a way to control his problem by putting him on a different prescription......prednisone is a steroid..which has testosterone levels in it.....if he already has a high testosterone level.....this will definetly make it worse.
