I'm talking ocean vs lake here. I know I can boat in the lake, but if I stayed within 100 yds or so, could I see the working waterfront and be safe from tipping. Thanks.

I live on the coast in Maine. My fiance is a lobsterman and we are avid fishing people. We had a 15 foot starcraft with a 50 Merc on it and did just fine. Just make sure you're careful for the lobster buoys and the rope in the water! Also, Beig in a smaller boat i would definitley stay inland, stick to bays and inlets, there are plenty of fish there too! Mackerel are just starting to pick up, but no pollock and a few cod showing up. The best website for the coast of maine weather is www.maineharbors.com then the mariners link. It will tell you the swell and how the seas are.

Well, i have a 28 foot Penn Yan inboard and i had no problem going to the sound yesterday. Im not sure but if its public waters and there are other ppl riding there, go for it. But check there before you go. Call a boatyard or something. Thats what i did.
