Just ask nicely. Your friend probably even forgot that they had it.

Past experience has taught me not to lend anything out anymore. May sound a little mean I know. But I would always be polite and tell them where I obtained the item of interest. I would be honest and to the point. Ask politely for the borrowed item to be returned. No if's, what's, why's as lies have a habit of catching you out. Besides, if people think you are being a pushover they might treat you like one. Hope your book gets returned :)

Just say in a off hand sort of way did you enjoy that book I lent you ? which will be a fair opening gambit to having a conversation about the book and you could say if you have not finished it you can have it again later

Just ask for it back, but be polite. Don't be a prick and say, "Hey you ever gonna give back my book or what?" Instead, say something like, "hey, you don't still have that book I lent ya a while back do you? You think I could get it back, I was kind of wanting to read it again."

I would just ask "Hey, whatever happened to my hat?" In an easy and non-confrontational way. Let then weave a web or give it back. Be prepared to lose the hat forever and whatever he does, that will be the basis for loaning things to him again. If he asks to borrow something else, just say coolly "Sorry, I don't loan my stuff out anymore. People don't seem to give my stuff back and I get screwed."

There are already some good answers & I haven't read them all so excuse me if I repeat someones answer.
Wait until he asks to borrow something else & just kind of scoff a little & say "Dude, you haven't even given me that book back from a while back yet".

You could ask if he is finished reading it because you'd like to have it back. Book lovers know how other book lovers feel about their books. If he really is a friend, he won't mind the question ... it's possible that he just clean forgot about it.

It's always best to be honest. Give them a call and tell them that you would like the book back. You don't have to give a reason, just ask nicely.

Just tell him in a nice way that you need the book for some work , or you can say : "By the way, I was wondering if have you finished the book I gave you. I need it for some work. You are welcome to it back anytime after I have finished." Something like that.

I have had to say no to many people in my life, because I would lend them my hard earned money, with the promise that they would pay me back soon. The "soon" never came.
It is very hard to ask anyone to repay you, but I have found that if and when you have to finally
ask your friend to repay you, that they really aren't true friends after all. So, do not be afraid to simply ask them to re-pay you and see if they are still your friend.

You have to go over to friends house and ask for the book. No excuses. Tell them that you are not the local library and if you were it would be long over due.
