That's horrible, I know, but just think how much worse it could get if you ruin your teeth. Think how beautiful your smile will be when you have had your treatment.

No one likes the dentist (not even dentists!)

Have you told your dentist how you feel? Many dentist specialise in working with phobic patients. It might help to take a tranquiliser (avaialable from your doctor) before you go.

You could try having some clinicla hypnosis (which a registered hypnotist) There might be a reason from your past, or an association that you could work through.

Good luck, hope it works out OK.

Hey - I don't think you're alone with this! Past horrors with dentists gave me a phobia too, and I'm sure there are many many other people with the same problem. Dentists and dentistry used to be brutal.

There came a point where I had to go to the dentist. I did a google search for "dentists for nervous patients" or something similar and found just such a place, a bus ride from where I live. They did an intravenous thing, so I didn't know/feel anything until it was all over.

Try that. And in the meanwhile, if you're in pain, take extra strength Nurofen (ibuprofen), which is proven to help soothe infection, and hold hot water in your mouth with as much salt in as you can take, for at least 3 minutes a time. Do this as often as you can. It tastes like S***T, but salt kills dental infections and helps any swelling go down. This trick has helped me avoid going to the dentist many times.

Good luck, and remember - you are not the only one.

Basically yo have 2 choices. Ongoing severe dental pain or the dentist.
Neither option is particularly pleasant. If money is no problem, there are many dentists that offer sedatives for people such as yourself.
The most important thing I can say os try to go to a dentist that has been personally recommend by a friend (don't go to one who has been recommend by your worst enemy).
Once you have an OK dental experience and you leave without any pain you will feel very pleased with yourself for overcoming this worry.
Good luck.

ok i also have a dental phobia. plus i have panic attacks, so it's like double the fear for me. i had an abscess tooth that needed to come out. i hadnt been to the dentist in about 9 years. so here's what i did when i had to have this tooth pulled. i took some xanax about 30 mins before the appointment. that's a sedative drug used for anxiety. i also brought along a portable cd player to listen to while he was pulling the tooth so that i wouldnt hear all the weird noises and such. the lidocaine worked it's magic and i didnt feel a thing, and with the xanax and cd player i didnt completely freak out. so i had my tooth pulled with no pain at all. so give those things a try and see how they work. having the pain from that abscess tooth has made me vow to never wait that long to go to a dentist.

I did not see a dentist for over 9Y's after a horrid time one time,

i got an abscess in my wisdom tooth and i need my old filling doing. so i went and i was scared to have this done. but since my first filling was done i was OK. Today was crunch time as i need my wisdom tooth taken out. i been put tin it off now for month until i got an abscess that was very pain full i wont wish the pain on anyone. so today after 3month of talking the dentist out of doing it and having the shock of the pain of the abscess i had it taken out, and yes i did fecal a little pain but not too much as the abscess stop the injection from working in parts of the nerve, but soon as it was out i felt nothing. and i know now how silly i have been, i still got to go and have two more filling. but now i had the worst tooth taken out and not been put to sleep as i wanted to in the 1st place ,i do recommend you see someone. trust me i have a phobia for many years and still made excuses up not to go.but now i wish i had, good look i know what you go in through, and if i can do it I'm sure you can.

I have the same problem so I sympathize with you. I have found that it helps if you meditate and relax. Clear your mind of the anxieties of the dentists and in its place think good relaxing things and only positive thoughts.
