DC Talk has a song called "What if I Stumble". The 1st phrase of the song is "The greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who profess to know God with their mouths, but deny Him with their lives. This is what an unbelieving world finds totally unbelievable". I am a Christian and I totally agree with this. What are your thoughts?

I agree 100% and that is why I strive to live a Godly life everyday but lets get real here we are only human. That is why Jesus died on the cross so that we could be forgiven. There are those who go to church for show and live life like do as i say not as i do but those people are easy to pick out. You should never let anyone between you and God because that just means that they were closer to begin with. There is only one thing i need to say to those who claim atheism, YOU BETTER BE SURE!

Wow, that certainly is thought provoking. Speaking as a non-Christian I would say that part of my perspective is defined by 'other' ie not Christian. It would be true to say that I am actually put off by the hypocrisy of so many Christians and I do not want to set myself up to fall. I keep my beliefs to myself, I try not to judge but at the same time let myself off the hook for inevitable mistakes. Unfortunately I find that I/we are also the one defined as 'other' by some Christians and a whole world of assumptions about who I/we are are put in place. As we all know, such strong beliefs are also the cause of so much war and unrest. I prefer to live in peace with my own beliefs.

Christians who preach, teach and swear by a God of hate, intolerance, impatience, racism, stupidity and limits.

Anyone with an IQ 2 points higher than a begonia, though, should be able to fiure out that by definition such a being would not be God; just some idiot's unbright idea of what they wished God WAS. Mostly so they could point to themselves and say how like unto God THEY were.

I disagree. The Greatest Cause of atheism in the world today is the Roman Catholic Church's (and to some extent other religious groups') use of belief in God to rationalize their pathetic opposition to capital punishment, all forms of war (including the absolutely-necessary war in Iraq) and keeping taxes on the middle class down when drug addicts, prostitutes, excessive gamblers & other fools are demanding extensive handouts from the government.

No. Science is the greatest cause of atheism as science is providing better answers no than religion ever could. christians are the cause for the rise in other religions but not atheism science is fueling that and as science discovers more atheism will rise and theism will fall. Say no to jesus.

that song may have a point and yes i agree atheist are caused by christianity all the time since they are well known to read the bible all the way thru and find no value in the book to start with and then they claim no religion since that is all they know and if christianity had it there way atheist would be burned at the stake like the pagans where at one time

Honestly, I'm a Christian too -- but I think the biggest cause of atheism today is that too many Christians are fundamentalists that cling to outmoded beliefs that are simply false. Evolution does occur and we certainly evolved; homosexuality is natural AND normal -- and therefore homosexuals deserve equality; the Bible IS mythic -- even the process of canonization tells us that; and on and on and on. It is also true that most fundamentalists do not live lives of boundless love -- but simply use their religious beliefs to cover up their own hatreds and to justify their prejudices -- but I think that is, while the great cause of secularism, not a root cause of the growth of atheism.

Religion is the greatest cause, though I can understand why Christianity is at the top, being the most popular religion in our, America's, culture today.

I totally agree with this statement, in fact so does GOD, it is written in the bible. Faith without works is dead.

Works in the bible, is obeying GOD and living out in the world, the way he has given us to live. If we profess GOD with our mouths, but continue to live as the world, no good is done, for ourselves or others.
