Wow. A lot of ... interesting answers ...

I wouldn't call the Bible a literal narration of events. Certainly there are parts of it that are literal. I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, and the gospels come to mind, but there's also the Psalms, which are poems of praise, mostly written by David, Song of Songs, which is love poetry and an intriguing metaphor for our relationship with God, not to mention the Creation account, which I view to be more fanciful and poetic than a lot of Christians (mainly fundamentalists) will admit. The Epistles, or the letters written by early apostles to early churches, are really insightful about how Jesus's life and ministry relates to the lives of normal people in the real world.

I find it interesting that you suggest that the Bible was written for dummies, because as far as I can tell, there aren't many people, even Christians who have read it in its entirety! I, myself, am only about a two thirds of the way through. If it were such easy reading, I would have to wonder why more people haven't read it! It also seems to me that a book that can be interpreted as many different ways as the Bible is interpreted (just look at the plethora of different church denominations, all with their minute differences in opinion, not to mention dissention within individual denominations!) has to have more to it than simple, literal accounts.

With so many interpretations, rewriting, etc. how could it be for dummies? It was written for intelligent study as stories of a nation.

No. Unfortunately, the dummies are the ones who can't see that it's pointing to a wonderful, creative, wise and all powerful Being.

the Bible is not just for dummies... it's a guide for all of us. Like a map, you may find it misleading, it has a lot of versions, but the truth is always there. It depends on how you search, ponder and pray. It depends on how you read it.
