Shotgun start - you have 144 players two groups start on each hole at the same time. That way everyone will finish at the same time. So if your group is 8B. You will start on hole 8 and your group tees of second behind group 8A. Your last hole will be hole 7.

Scramble - I always joke around and say I play one man scramble. Everyone on the team hits, the team picks which shot they like best. The other players pick up their balls and everyone hits second shot from that spot. Sometimes the event has requirements like each person must hit at least two drives that the team plays. One thing to remember when you play scramble is once the ball goes in the hole the hole is over. That means if your the first person to put for a 3 and you end up an inch away from the hole. You must mark it, because if you putt it out the hole is over with a score of 4.

"Shotgun Start": Normally when you start a round of golf you start out on the first tee. What if you have a large group of say 30 golfers or so, and you all want to start play at the same time. You could all spread out on the golf course, and everyone start play at a different hole. In order to all start at the same time you would need some kind of signal to start everyone. Why not use a shot gun, and tell everyone to start at the shound of the gun.

"Scramble": I am not sure but I think a scramble is when you play in groups of 3 or 4 or so. Everyone hits their first ball from the tee. Then you see who had the best shot, and everyone's second shot is taken from the point where the best shot landed. You continue in this manner, playing from the point of the best shot.

shotgun start=everyone in the tournoment starts at the same time on different holes. the opposite of shotgun start is tee times, when everyone starts on number one, but at different times

scramble=a form of tournoment game in which you have 4 people on a team and each hits off the teebox, but the team choooses the best shot. pretty much you have 4 different chances to get the ball in the hole. normally this form of play is flighted( A, B, C, and D players A the best, D the worst)

judging from your question you probably signed up for a tournoment that will have a shotgun start and you'll be playing a scramble.

Shotgun start means the golfers that are carrying guns go first. A scramble in golf is when you have finished 9 holes you rest and have scrambled eggs before you play the next 9 holes.

the rules of a "Scramble" are:

Teams of 2 or more compete.
Each member of the team hits thier own drive.
The team picks the best drive from the team, and all other members of the team place thier ball next to that drive.
Each member of the team hits a ball from that spot and then the team chooses the shot they like the best.
They fallow this rutine for the entire hole, including when putting.
There are no individual scores, there is one team score at the end of the hole.

"A Shotgun" start is when all players in a tournament all start at the same time from different holes. You will be told what hole you are starting at when you check in at the tournament. (there is no actual shooting off a shotgun).

A "Shotgun Start" means you place a Foursome or less at each
of the 18 holes and they all tee-off at the same time.
A "Scramble' means a Foursome tees off and you play the best
ball lay of the 4 players on the fairway and also on the green.

As others have said, mulligan is to take a shot over without penalty. Strickly against the rules of golf but may be allowed in a very "casual" round. Supposed to came from the term "maul it again".
